Bangladesh reports one more dengue death in 24hrs

At least one more patient died of dengue at Bangladesh’s biggest health facility, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, in the past 24 hours till Friday morning, taking the official death toll to 33 across the country since January this year.

The Directorate General of Health Services data showed that at least 176 dengue patients were admitted to the DMCH this year, 10 of them died in the health facility.

 

Of the deceased from dengue this year, 14 died in January, three in February, five in March, two in April and nine in 17 days of May, said a DGHS press release.

In the past 24 hours ending 8:00am on Friday, 12 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country and the number of hospitalisation from the mosquito-borne viral disease rose to 2, 581 this year.

Of the hospitalisation this year, 1,055 were reported in January, 339 in February, 311 in March and with the slight increase 504 in April, and 372 in 17 days of May.

There are 135 dengue patients hospitalised now countrywide.

Dengue killed 1,705 people and sent 3,21,179 people to hospitals in 2023 alone against 853 deaths and 2,44,246 hospitalisation between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.

A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to DGHS data.
